WII promotes sustainable energy development through accelerated commercialization of energy efficiency and clean and renewable energy technologies through its energy and environment programme. The overarching goal is to bring about significant improvement in the quality of life of the people through sustainable solutions linked to the development process and livelihoods.
Its major initiatives of WIIs energy and environment programme are in the areas of market development for renewable energy, promotion of energy efficiency in different sectors, and capacity building at various levels to enable and improve access to finance and credit services for renewable energy. ENE also works toward formulation of policies that would lead to an enabling environment for clean and renewable energy market development.
WII works independently and in collaboration with government, NGOs, research institutions, industry, bilateral and multilateral development agencies, on projects aimed at achieving poverty elimination and sustainable development.
With respect to rural electrification through straight run non-edible vegetable oil WII is leveraging the use of this technology by implementing it in one village. This would act as a model for the Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources to follow and adopt in setting up similar plants towards meeting their mandate of electrifying more than 25000 remote villages through renewable energy. It is also seeking to quantify the venefits of the intervention in terms of indicators on energy security, livelihood opportunities, environmental benefits, and other social evolution ? and to document the process extensively so that others would be encouraged to replicate the model.
